Boat Museum

Step into the story of the Faroese boat.

Experience traditional fishing boats from Leirvík – and see the oldest preserved rowing boat in the Faroe Islands.

At the Boat Museum, you’ll discover the history of Faroese rowing fisheries and the lives of the men who rowed out from Leirvík. From around 1890 to 1945, about 40 men from Leirvík traveled to Iceland each year, where they fished from Vattarnes in East Iceland. There, they lived in simple huts throughout the summer and returned home to the Faroe Islands in the autumn.

The boats in the museum were part of this life, and each of them carries its own stories connected to the men and their fishing work.

At the museum, you can also see Hvanngarð, owned by men from Syðrugøta, which is considered the oldest preserved rowing boat in the Faroe Islands, built around 1830.
